DT&I Steam Locomotives

Here are a few pictures of DT&I steam locomotives that I have come across. The three below are builders photos of the last modern steam locomotives the railroad received prior to dieselization. Number 700 was the first of the 2-8-4 R-1 class engines the DT&I purchased from the Lima (Ohio) Locomotive Works in 1935. Number 800 was the class engine of the magnificent 2-8-2 L-1 class engines, also from Lima built in 1940. These were among the largest "Mikado" type locomotives ever built and were nearly identical to the 700's, except for a smaller firebox and minus the extra axle under the firebox. The 800's are considered by many to be the finest locomotives ever owned by the Detroit, Toledo & Ironton.

DT&I 2-8-2 #800 built by Lima in 1940.

DT&I 2-8-2 #804 built by Lima in 1941.

DT&I #804 was part of the second order of L-1's the railroad placed in January, 1941. These engines arrived just in time to help out in America's war effort.
